Methodology for Anti-Noise Signal Validation in Multichannel Gas Turbine Engine Data
Abstract
The paper proposes a methodology for separating persistent pre-failure changes from random noise in multichannel gas turbine engine data. The methodology is built on stable-operation data: first, an external reference description of stable operation is formed; next, the deviation of each signal from this reference is evaluated and checked for persistence rather than accidental fluctuation. The confirmed deviations are then combined into a unit-level warning event. Validation on operational data showed that 41 confirmed signals remained out of 163 initial triggers in fault-related series, whereas 28 confirmed signals remained out of 67 on stable-operation data. The first confirmed signals in fault scenarios appeared in the interval of 4.3-16.1 hours before the failure. After the transition to the unit-level warning event, no false unit-level warnings were obtained over 126.8 hours of stable operation, while in 5 out of 6 fault scenarios the warning was formed in the interval of 4.3-9.1 hours before the failure. These results indicate that the methodology can be used as an independent signal-preparation stage for diagnostic and prognostic systems.
